Sex is everywhere; it’s in magazines, movies and in songs. It’s a favorite activity of many, and rightfully so, but when you find that it’s on your mind too often and being acted out through masturbation or casual sex on a constant basis, you could be suffering from sex addiction.

Sex addiction affects a wide range of people, from different ethnic backgrounds and of different ages.
 
An overexposure to sex and sexual behaviors via television, movies, magazines, internet websites, music videos and the real world has been blamed for the addiction that is affecting many young people in addiction to adults.
 
Single or married, gay or straight, you can acquire an addiction to sex. In a world that blurs the lines between normal, healthy sexuality and unhealthy dangerous sexual behaviors, it can be difficult to tell if you have a sex addiction and require help. Signs Of Addiction

How can an act as wonderful and enjoyable as sex harm you?

When unsafe and unhealthy sexual behavior comes into play, the wonderful act of sex can be one of the most disastrous.

A few of the ways in which sexual addiction damages the addict’s life are:

  • Loss of family and friends – many personal relationships have been ruined as a result of sex addiction; the hurt, shame and loss of trust tears apart families and friendships.

Admitting that you have an addiction, an uncontrollable preoccupation with sex and need recovery is the first step in the right direction.

Here are a few other steps to take on how to fight sex addiction:

  • Find your local SAA (Sex Addicts Anonymous) and get the support and guidance you need throughout your recovery.
  • Ask for the support of friends and family, especially a spouse; ask for forgiveness if necessary.
  • Go to behavioral counseling – a behavioral counseling specialist can help you to identify those traits within yourself that allowed your sex addiction to form and escalate so that you can work on eliminating or changing them.
  • Break off contact with any casual sex partners or prostitutes you were seeing.
  • Maintain your health – if you haven’t already, get tested for all STDs and work on improving your mental health by building up your self esteem.

Through commitment to recovery and a healthy lifestyle, you can come to fully enjoy your sexuality and sex life.

Being in the Hotel game and having a TAB right next door, I saw many gamblers.
 
Even though they were working they would still come and borrow money from us (one rule I have now got is, if you haven’t got the money you don’t buy it, and especially don’t borrow to gamble) go and gamble, sometimes we got paid back, sometimes not.
 
You always hear about the big wins not the losing. Watching them it was the constant highs and lows of these guys.
 
They are in the hotel all day, drinking and gambling (not a good mix) they have a win and are happy on a high throwing their money around, next they lose, they start drinking more as they are depressed and they are starting to steal money off the bar and fights start, the rest is up to your imagination, but it wasn’t pretty.

addictionThe Definition of Addiction is fairly broad, dig deeper and we would find the true meaning and understanding of Addiction. Here I show you.

The world-renowned Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines addiction as a compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance characterized by tolerance and well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful.

Surely you have heard the word addiction, but many people do not understand the meaning of the word until they have experienced the noun when it takes on its transitive verb form, addicted.

In other words, once it is no longer just a noun, but an active word taking place within their lives or the lives of someone they love.

The definition of addiction is fairly broad and easily understandable, but shall we dig deeper?

If we did we would find the true meaning of addiction and have a greater understanding of it.

Knowing is everything, it helps us to assist others because of an ability to recognize addiction and perhaps to even help ourselves.

What is an Addiction?

Simply stated, addiction is the loss of control over your life as a result of your abuse of a substance or an activity.

Truthfully, the majority of people suffer from some form of addiction during their lifetime, whether or not they realize it and seek recovery. Until I started to write my book I never realized just how many addictions I had, Overcoming Life’s Challenges and how I overcame them.

The most prominent addictions are drug and alcohol abuse, but there are many types of addictions.

This is why it is so likely that every individual has or has had some form of addiction.

It may not be apparent to them; it may start off slow and gradually develop.

Most any activity or substance that gives some form of pleasure to the individual can become an addiction.

Why do certain people become addicted?

While the majority of people would become addicted to any hard drug at first try, there are others who simply have additive personalities, family histories of addiction or who come from different environments where addictions are more exposed to them and therefore they are more likely to partake in an activity or use of a substance that could lead to addiction.

A Living Definition of Addiction

How can you tell if you are a living definition of addiction?

Here are a few general signs that can help you to determine whether or not you have any type of addiction:

  • You have began partaking in an activity or using a substance that you know to be harmful, yet you continue to use it or participate.
  • You have experienced problems with your family, friends or at your place of employment as a result of the activity or use of the substance.
  • You have began to neglect responsibilities, family, friends, former hobbies, rearranged your schedule or became truant to school or work to partake in the activity or use the substance.
  • You have stolen money, pawned or sold items or wiped out your funds to support your participation in the activity or use of the substance.
  • You feel guilty or ashamed during or after use of the substance or participation in the activity.
  • You become anger when someone suggests that you may have an addiction to the activity or substance.
  • You experience withdrawal systems when unable to do the activity or use the substance; these symptoms differ depending on the exact nature of your addiction, but common withdrawal symptoms include anxiety, obsessive thinking about the substance or activity, uncontrollable cravings, shivers, irritability, and mood swings.
If any of the previously mentioned signs of addiction sound similar to your use of a substance or an activity that you are participating in, there is a good chance that you have an addiction.
 
It’s difficult to come clean about an addiction of any kind; no one likes to admit that they have lost control of anything, especially their own bodies and minds.
 
Yet, the only way to rid yourself of your hurtful habits is to admit to them and get on the road to recovery.

Is the best part of waking any kind of coffee in your cup?

Do you enjoy a good cup of coffee while indulging in afternoon conversation with a good friend?

Or are you more of a regular at Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts?

If the employees know you by name, there could be a real problem at hand.

A problem that goes by the name of an Addiction to coffee.

An addiction to coffee is an extremely real addiction and is very common around the world.

Coffee can be purchased by the cup at franchises that bring in billions of dollars and even small local cafes and coffees shops have high success rates.

Why?

Because people enjoy coffee and some even rely on it.

Whether or not they realize it.

They use it as a comfort, an energy booster and a conversation piece.

It’s even served at many addiction support meetings!

Coffee contains caffeine, which gives a non, lasting energy boost and it also stimulates the Central Nervous System, which affects the stress hormones and causes you to feel abnormally alert or relaxed.

No wonder it’s become a part of our culture and at prices starting out as cheap as $1.50, it’s one of the most affordable addictions.

While drinking coffee in moderation is okay, too much is bad for your well being and may lead to addiction.

If you need to make a cup of coffee at the start of each day or make a stop at your local coffee shop on the way to work Monday through Friday, you are likely suffering from an addiction to coffee. Signs Of Addiction

The Damages of Coffee Addiction

  • Nausea.
  • Anxiety.
  • Fatigue.
  • Difficulty sleeping.
  • Jitters and increased heart rate due to excess caffeine in the system.
  • Frequent Headaches.
  • Stomach pains.
  • Malnourishment due to lack of a healthy diet and excess coffee consumption.
  • Going over budget due to spending money on coffee.

Overcoming Coffee Addiction

Although coffee is absolutely everywhere (have you noticed a Starbucks on every city street corner?) you can overcome your addiction to it and make a healthy start through recovery.

Here are some ways in which you can begin overcoming addiction to your coffee:

  • Realize that you are addicted to coffee and cannot enjoy nor consume it in the same fashion as some others.
  • Gradually decrease your coffee intake, as quitting cold turkey is not recommended for this addiction. Instead of purchasing the Grande size cup, get a size down. Slowly mixing decaf into your regular coffee is also helpful.
  • Find alternative drinks; orange juice is a great choice as it contains Vitamin C and is a favorite morning beverage; flavored water is another option.
  • Avoid routes that take you by a coffee shop.
  • Ask friends, family and co-workers who would normally purchase a coffee for you not to do so.
  • Exercise; this will curb your cravings for coffee and give you a genuine energy boost.
Committing to recovery from your addiction will allow you to put down the caffeine infused drink and enjoy a cup of life!

The majority of smokers truly desire to quit smoking, but resolve to lightening another cigarette and forgetting about it.

They think it’s hopeless.
 
Others feel it isn’t a habit; they only light one up in the company of friends, often referred to as social smoking.

Have you ever walked into a school nurses’ office or other care center and noticed an anti-smoking poster that displayed a very disturbing picture of a beautiful young smoker’s less than attractive insides?

That picture was an honest depiction of the damage that addiction to cigarettes can do.

The addiction ruins your insides and eventually your outside appearance and even the world around you becomes affected.

Here are some of the ways cigarette addiction has harmed those touched by it through the years:

  • Heart disease
  • Cancer.
  • Death as a result of complications caused by the above diseases.
  • Respiratory problems.
  • Loss of smell or taste.
  • Fires (each year house fires result with a reported cause of cigarette smoking, when the smoker fell asleep while smoking or accidentally dropped their cigarette).
  • Decrease in physical appearance.
  • Birth defects in a fetus if smoking is done during pregnancy.
  • Damage to the health of a breastfed child, as well as children who are living in a home with a smoker (whether or not smoking is done in or out of the home).

Overcoming Cigarette Addiction

Cigarette addiction can be overcome through commitment and a smart cessation plan.

Here are a few basic tips to get you overcoming addiction to cigarettes:

  • Realize that you are addicted to cigarettes but believe that you can break the addiction, regardless of how long you have been smoking.
  • Determine whether you can quit cold turkey or need to do so gradually, cutting down on your average number of cigarettes smoked in a day or week.
  • Reach out to your local Narcotics Anonymous for support.
  • Avoid hanging out in areas where others are engaging in smoking (for example, behind a workplace).
  • Ask for the support of family and friends; also, do not allow anyone to smoke around you or in your home.
  • Exercise and get on a healthy diet; this will help repair some of the issues caused by cigarette smoking to your body while providing an outlet for stress.
  • Drink plenty of water; water will flush the nicotine out of your system and curb cravings.
  • Come up with a personalized cessation plan; set a date to quit by, write out your reasons for smoking and when and where you do it most, then seek out other ways to deal with situations or feelings that would usually be dealt with through smoking.
Visualize yourself as a nonsmoker, free of addiction every day.

Before you know it, you will be living out your visualizations.

Being a non smoker but married to a smoker, I found it very hard to deal with.

The 28 years I have been with my husband Rob he has smoked, and to make it worse he either had a beard or mustache and when he smoked and I kissed him I could smell and taste it.

Two years ago after a lot of nagging from me about dying of lung cancer he gave up, he smoked for 47 years.

My two older children don’t smoke but my youngest does. He is now trying to give up smoking, he is 26, he said to me Mum, I can feel it in my chest, the coughing, and because he pumps weights he feels as though he can’t get enough air into his Lungs.

You have to want to, and with both my husband and son they both want to, they can see the damage it is doing.

Chocolate has been a well loved confection for centuries.

There is hardly an occasion you where chocolate couldn’t serve as an appropriate gift.

It’s linked with holidays.

It has even been romanticized!

What is it about chocolate that has caused its unfaltering popularity?

Well, it certainly does make you feel better and it isn’t all in your head.

Chocolate contains endorphins and other opiates that reduce stress and create feelings of euphoria.

So, you truly can get a “high” from the consumption of chocolate.

If you’re like most people, you love a good box or bar of chocolate.

On occasion.

When the occasion becomes every day, you may be dealing with a chocolate addiction.

It is just as real as any other addiction and requires attention, so overcoming addiction to chocolate is so important to achieve recovery.

There is such a thing as death by chocolate, only it is a metaphorical death of your health and well being. Signs Of Addiction

The Damage of Chocolate

An addiction to chocolate has a way of creeping into your life, looking like a friend when it is in fact an enemy and doing its damage, just the same as any addiction.

A few of the ways in which chocolate addiction does its damage are:

  • Obesity
  • Poor dental health.
  • Heart palpitations caused by the caffeine chocolate contains.
  • Fatigue after energetic highs.
  • Diabetes.
  • Poor Complexion.

Overcoming Addiction To Chocolate

Admittance to your chocolate addiction is an absolute must before you begin your recovery from it. You must make a genuine effort to beat your addiction.

Here are a few tips to help get you on your way to overcoming addiction to chocolate:

  • Stop justifying your chocolate abuse; often, chocoholics tell themselves their abuse of the sweet is okay, “I’ve had a bad day, I deserve this!” Sound familiar?. I use to do this all the time, it was my comfort, my reward.
  • Switch to healthier snacks that give you a real feel good feeling that lasts and betters your health (veggies, granola, yogurts and fruit). Once I was able to get rid of my sweet tooth I found I didn’t crave that bit of chocolate anymore, I knew it was bad for me and in my mind I thought if I eat it I will feel sick and I didn’t want to feel sick.
  • Don’t try to replace your regular chocolate with so called “healthy” chocolates. Sugar free, fat free and low calorie chocolates will only cause you to crave the chocolate you are used to eating and you won’t truly break free of your addiction.
  • Ask lovers, friends and family members who would normally purchase chocolates for you not to do so.
  • Exercise, it will curb cravings and help you drop what the chocolate helped you gain.
  • Get support, there are many groups out there. Online and on location – find them!.

Realize that there are certainly benefits to chocolate consumption (dark chocolate has antioxidants and is said to lower blood pressure and cholesterol), but too much of anything is bad.

Overcoming addiction to chocolate, which you will do so you will be able to take a bite out of the confection and savor it without having it take a bite out of your life.

For me,it went back to my lonely childhood, I had a really sweet tooth, years later I realized I had the sweet tooth because I was trying to sweeten myself so I would be loved – I talk more about this in my book Overcoming Life’s Challenges here I share with you how I overcame my sweet tooth.
